Overnight Asian markets were mixed and European markets were up slightly. Today the US Census Bureau will release the data on housing starts and building permits. Shortly after that we'll get a look at the capacity utilization and industrial production numbers followed by Mich sentiment. The market seems to be of two minds this week. The economic data has provided a positive outlook but earnings have been unimpressive. On the earnings front we'll hear from General Electric, Morgan Stanley and Sund Trust. Trade strong.
Stocks closed mixed yesterday. The NASDAQ was up 0.1%, the S&P was down 0.1% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was off by -0.4%. All in all a pretty uninspiring day with lower than average volumes across exchanges. Initial claims were a bit better than expected coming in at 326K vs the expected 333K. The CPI data showed that prices increased in line with expectations at 0.3%. The move higher was the result of an up tic in energy prices. Last but not least the Philly Fed number came in higher than expected at 9.4.
